The Who – Who Are You

About the Song

On August 26, 1978, “Who Are You” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, destined to become The Who’s biggest American hit in eight years. Early in the 21st century, millions would recognize it as the theme for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, but back then, it was simply a fresh, powerful track from a legendary band.

Crafted by Pete Townshend and driven by Roger Daltrey’s electrifying vocals, “Who Are You” carries a bittersweet edge, as it marks the last major hit featuring drummer Keith Moon, who tragically passed away on September 7, 1978, just as the song was climbing the charts.

An Eight-Year Milestone

“Who Are You” entered the US charts as the highest new entry of the week at No. 70, while in the UK, it climbed to a peak of No. 18. Over the following weeks, it gained momentum, reaching No. 14 in November, marking The Who’s highest chart position in the US since “See Me, Feel Me” hit No. 12 in 1970.

The accompanying album, Who Are You, followed soon after, achieving double platinum status in the US despite the band not touring to promote it. Roger Daltrey, in an interview with Sounds during the release, reflected on the band’s journey.

“We’ve Never Sold Out”

“The Who — maybe not as a stage group, but The Who as a feeling, as an idealistic group — is stronger than ever,” Daltrey shared. “And I don’t think we’ve ever sold out, even though I suppose we’re ‘out’ at the moment.”

“When people say, ‘Oh, we’re rich and I’ve got a big house and all that,’ I can’t hide the fact that I’ve earned a lot of money. What am I supposed to do? Put it all in the bank and live in a bungalow? I don’t know. I make no apologies for being successful.”
