“It’s a Matter of Time” is a song written by Clive Westlake and recorded in 1972 by Elvis Presley. It was released as the B-side to his hit single “Burning Love”. While the A-side made it to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, the flip side (“It’s a Matter of Time”) charted both on the Billboard Easy Listening and Hot Country Singles charts. “Burning Love / It’s a Matter of Time” became the last Elvis Presley’s single to be certified platinum.
The song was recorded during the March 27–29, 1972 recording session at the RCA Studios in Nashville. The session was produced by Felton Jarvis and featured the backing band of Presley’s regular touring musicians, including James Burton on guitar, Glen D. Hardin on piano, Jerry Scheff on bass, and Ronnie Tutt on drums.
“It’s a Matter of Time” is a mid-tempo ballad with a gentle country feel. The song’s lyrics tell the story of a man who is patiently waiting for his love to come around to him. He knows that it is just a matter of time before she realizes that he is the one for her.
The song was well-received by critics and fans alike. AllMusic critic Richie Unterberger praised Presley’s vocal performance, calling it “one of his most understated and effective vocals in years.” He also noted the song’s “beautiful melody and tender lyrics.”
“It’s a Matter of Time” has been covered by a number of artists over the years, including Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, and Willie Nelson. It is also a popular song among Elvis Presley fans, and is often performed at tribute concerts.
